Shushtar, a city in Khuzestan Province, has been alive for more than 4500 years with the vital help of Karoun River which passes through it. Shushtar is limited to the Bakhtiyari Mountain Ranges from north, to city of Masjid Soleiman from east, to Dezfoul from west, to Ahwaz from south, and to Ramhormoz from southeast. This city is believed to have been constructed during the Elamite Period (2700 BC-539 BC) and was given special attention during Ardeshir and Shapour, the Sassanid Kings, due to which the city flourished and became the capital city of the Sassanid kings during the wintertime. A number of evidence and historical relics as well as burial methods seen in Shushtar reveal that this city came to its peak after the Islamic period. Due to the existence of holy shrines of descendents of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and the large number of mosques built in this city, Shushtar in know as the city of “forty elders” among the local inhabitants.
